Process Based Education

Process-Based Learning, Executive Functioning in Education, & Project-Based Learning Skills

Beyond the Project, Diving into the Process

Projects are an amazing way for students to experience learning hands-on. As much as possible, I try to involve as many modes of learning as possible. Doing so makes learning more practical and understandable.

That being said, some students may need support in their executive functioning. Students need to learn what the learning process looks like before they can do so independently. I use the Getting Ready, Doing, Done process to build on the skills of planning and prioritization, key elements of any project.

Students typically jump into doing a project without fully imagining "what done looks like." To do a successful project, students must first imagine their final project and then backward plan. This is a process that takes time and skill. With assistance, students will complete each project through a series of self-determined steps with the goal of independence.
